Ingredients

  • 4 large onions thinly sliced
  • 4 cups beef broth
  • ½ cup dry white wine
  • 2 tablespoon butter
  • 1 tablespoon flour
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon pepper
  • 4 slices French bread toasted
  • 1 cup grated Gruyere cheese

Instructions 

  1. 1. Melt butter in a large pot over medium heat. Add onions and cook until caramelized, about 25 minutes.
  2. 2. Stir in flour and cook for another 2 minutes.
  3. 3. Add beef broth, white wine, sugar, salt, and pepper. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 30 minutes.
  4. 4. Preheat your oven's broiler.
  5. 5. Ladle soup into oven-safe bowls. Top each with a slice of toasted French bread and a generous amount of grated Gruyere cheese.
  6. 6. Place bowls under the broiler until the cheese is melted and bubbly, about 2-3 minutes.
  7. 7. Serve hot and enjoy!
